In Season: Tomatoes

With summer in full swing, my dad’s homegrown tomato production has peaked. For the second straight-year, the family backyard is better described as our tomato farm. Thus, I am on the hunt for new tomato centered seasonal recipes.

Family and friends (even strangers) cannot escape our heirloom tomato “gifts” as we struggle to give away the tomatoes because they ripen faster than we can eat them! If it’s summer, family friends who hate tomatoes should steer clear of dinner invites on our “farm”. Last night’s tomato themed entertaining menu? Sun-dried tomatoes, tomato confit, tomato & basil soup, salmon with cilantro tomato cream sauce. I’m surprised guests escaped some form of tomato flavored dessert.  Even if you don’t normally like tomatoes you’d probably like these – homegrown tomatoes in any recipe equals immediate success!

While we always fall back on the traditional classics like tomato bruschetta and salsa recipes, as a result of increasing family pressure to eat more tomatoes, I am eagerly seeking new and delicious uses for our homegrown bounty. Latlely, SeriousEats has been a great source of seasonal tomato recipe love. I’m taking this opportunity to collect these recipes here in one tomato dedicated post.
